Students at the Gdansk University of Technology are building a hydrogen-powered car

An environmentally friendly electric vehicle powered by a hydrogen cell is being built by a group of students from the Gdansk University of Technology. According to estimates, the car should overcome approx. 300 km on one liter of hydrogen. In May, the students want to present them in London at a competition of environmentally friendly vehicles.

The three-wheeled vehicle, whichoThe car’s body is made of fiberglass andoThe carbon car is three meters long and weighs about 40 kg. – Of course, thanks to such light weight, less energy is needed to accelerate the car – Bartlomiej Ząbek, president of the Interdepartmental Scientific Circle, told PAP „Eco CarPG” Gdansk University of Technology, ktorego members build a vehicle.

The car uses a fuel cell package with a total power of 500 watts. They produce electricity from hydrogen, whichory then powers the Maxon 200 W motor. – Thanks to the use of cells, the vehicle is very environmentally friendly – Ząbek pointed out.

As he explained, this is another version of the hydrogen cell vehicle being built by a member of theow wheels – an improved version of the previous.

Today, more than a dozen people are working on the vehicleob z roThe departmentoIn the Polytechnic, but the project has already involved a total of about 50 peopleob. – The circle has existed since 2012 and the team is changing – as eacholne years graduate, those leaving are replaced by new students – explained Ząbek.

He added that during the development of the vehicle, a m.in. proprietary system that recovers energy during braking. – We also tested the rohe different types of transmissions and engineoin for the propulsion of our vehicle, and we hope that this work will result in a vehicle thatory will allow us to achieve a good result in the Shell Eco-marathon competition in London, i.e. to run as many kilometers as possibleow on the least amount of fuel – Ząbek told PAP.

He explained that no test has yet been carried out on theoin, but according to estimatesow studentsow auto should moc to cover about 300 kilometersoin on one liter of hydrogen.

Shell Eco-marathon

Addressed to young constructoroThe Shell Eco-marathon competition will be held at the end of May in London. Teams from schooł secondary schools and universities from around the world. A year ago, more than 200 cars took part in the competition. The vehicles covered the designated route, and the jury – based on fuel consumption – assessed their energy efficiency; in eacholnych categories were won by teams thatoof which vehicles were able to travel the longest distance on the equivalent of one liter of fuel or one kWh.

Students from the Gdansk University of Technology have already taken part in the competition three times (in 2014-2016). So far they have not managed to stand on the podium, but they hope that the vehicle, which is being improved year by year, will eventually bring them success. – The competition itself is a great opportunity to exchange experiences. People come from all over the world, and each team has some of its own innovations, with ktoThe car can be seen – noted Ząbek.

In the future, the students want to continue to improve the car, including a dynamometer thatowhich will optimize the drive and electronics. Ząbek added that the wheel is also looking for sponsorshipoin, whichoers would be able to helpoc students in further development of the vehicle, including the purchase of someoThe materialow and parts.
